“What will you tell Cole?” Dayne asked. Greta knew he was concerned the alpha might make his own appearance, and though Blake was intimidating, Cole was in a whole other league of large and in charge. The alpha might not be so easily swayed.
“I’ll tell him you passed my tests. I’m good at what I do. He might assume I was a bit more persuasive, but he’ll take my word. I don’t know the details, but I do know that Cole doesn’t trust you. Don’t get on his radar again.”
“Don’t worry,” Dayne said.
When the wolf left, Dayne blocked the path Greta had planned for her escape. He looked so lost she had to turn her face away. She couldn’t look into those pleading eyes knowing she was the one who’d put the expression there with her absence.
Her body was humming all over. It had taken everything in her not to jump him as soon as she was in her human form, and now there were no remaining distractions or buffers between the two of them.
“Are we going to be okay?” he asked.
She couldn’t do anything but nod. He reached for her, and she pulled back, not sure she was prepared to feel his skin against hers yet. It was too overwhelming, so tempting to go back and be mad some more.
“Please don’t change back. Stay,” he said as if sensing her indecision. “I just helped her because I thought she was in trouble. That’s all. There weren’t any old feelings. I was just trying to do the right thing.”
Greta hesitated, then moved toward him. It seemed crass to bicker over the issue. Either way, Esmeralda was gone. Why rub salt in it? Dayne had cared for her once. “Will you get the chocolate sauce? And put it back exactly where you had it?”
His eyes widened, and a brilliant smile lit his face. A smile she’d missed so much it hurt. He went to the cupboard to get the chocolate. It was a good thing Blake had left when he did, as all of Greta’s human side had just now come back, and they had a bit of an issue she’d yet to disclose to the sorcerer.
“Oh, and Dayne? I haven’t been able to take my pills. I hope you’ve got the stamina to keep up.”
“Meow,” he said.
